Each year Association Media & Publishing hosts the EXCEL Awards, a program that honors excellence in print and digital association publishing. The 36th annual AM&P EXCEL Awards recently concluded, and at the end, 119 organizations took home 226 awards, including four awards for three YGS clients: the Pulmonary Hypertension Association; the National Association of Secondary School Principals; and the Appalachian Mountain Club. Each YGS client was honored with design-related awards.
“The EXCEL Awards program is the only competition solely for association print and digital publishing. Peers and industry providers are the judges, so winning an award means your publication or website or promotional campaign has been recognized as the best by people who are doing the same kinds of work you’re doing,” said AM&P Executive Director John T. Adams III.
The 2016 EXCEL Awards Gala marked record attendance, with just under 300 guests joining the celebration. Adams attributes this attendance increase to changes in the judging and entry-retrieval system. “This year we introduced a cloud-based awards management system provided by AcclaimWorks, which automated and streamlined entry submission and judging results. Having the results earlier than in previous years meant we could notify the winners earlier and invite them to attend the gala.”
Judges had opportunities to discuss entries in each category they were judging and then rated each entry in the automated judging system using a 10-point scale. The system calculated the average scores and ranked the entries in each category.
Entries for this year’s competition were submitted starting in late 2015. By the final deadline in late spring 2016, AM&P had received 872 entries from 191 organizations. There were more than 100 categories in the 2016 competition, which included updates to the categories based on submissions from the previous year’s awards.
“We realigned the top-level categories, combining Media Innovation and Web Publishing into a single Digital Media category. Some categories were combined and others were expanded,” Adams said. “I expect additional changes to be made for the 2017 competition based on the entries we received this year.”
It’s already time to begin thinking about next year’s awards, too. The YGS Group Marketing Services team looks forward to the submission process each year, which provides them and their clients the opportunity to review a year’s worth of hard work.
